What are the criteria for being a 'genuine student' as mentioned in the Australia student visa laws?
Please I would like to know what are the specific criteria that have to be met to be considered a genuine student when applying for an Australian student visa? Please be as explanatory as possible.

There has been a history of people from India to apply for a student visa to attend "hairdressing, cooking and IT" courses which are the cheapest around and never turn up - but disappear into the woodwork. The government is now checking the status of students so the colleges have to report any non-attendance of international students in their courses to the immigration department. In other words - you have to be here to study - not work.

You need to be a genuine student - so you are here to study. Student visas in most countries (it's common in other places like the UK) require you to be there to study. Depending on the country, you may be able to work a few hours a week - ten to fifteen hours a week, However working full time is a big no-no. Alas many "students" come in to work not sturdy hence the word genuine...
