I'd like to have my own room, nothing fancy, just the very basic.. no idea what the cost of rent would be plus other miscellaneous expenses.. would i be able to support myself working 20 hours a week?

Working 20 hours a week will give you after tax around $250 a week. Rent in a shared apartment near the uni (where these share type places are located) will be around $220 week sharing a room to $300 with your own room. That only is the rent portion nothing else. The information given to international students is that you can earn around 60% of your living costs by working the max hours. Thats all. Also you need to know that getting job with 20 hours a week every week is impossible - it will be 12 hours one week, 20 the next, 18 the next etc. If there is not much business, casuals are asked to leave.
