How do i apply for a job in Australia as a current student in Canada?
I'm a student at university in Ontario. My girlfriend is going to school in Australia for the summer so I've decided i'm going to go down and live with her for a few months in the summer. I was wondering how i would go about applying for a restaurant-type job in Sydney for the summer months. I'm obviously new to this, so any pointers or tips would be greatly appreciated.

No. You may be able to gain work experience, but you are not allowed to work for money while on a student visa. This should have been made clear to you.
2 :
if you are studying full time you can work anywhere for 20 hours a week You MUST be studying.....you may need to apply for a student work visa
3 :
The difficulty is that since you are only allowed to work 20 hours a week and those hours have to fit around your uni schedule its unlikely that you will find 20 hours within 9-5pm M-F to work in a company. No software developer will hire a student to work from home - this is a perk of an experienced SD.

This will depend whether you live on or off campus and whether you share that accomodation. For Accomodation you will probably need at a minimum $100 per week. For food, well again that depends on how much you eat. But budget $100-150 per week. You will then need fares and general living expenses. Again another $100-150 per week. Then ther will be fees and other uni expenses. So at a guess about $20000 for the year and that is living frugally. If you live in Canberra then add another $5000.

An aussie student has put up a guide for people coming from aboad to study in australia with forums to connect to other student in australia or thinkin bot getting there i think they should be able to answer your question check out http://www.connect-aus.co.nr or http://www.studyabroad.c-o.in

There is a cost of living guide for students interested in taking classes in Australia at: http://www.studyaustralia.com.au/services.htm http://www.studyaustralia.com.au/living.htm#4 http://www.studyaustralia.com.au/living.htm#3 Along with lots of advice on choosing an institution, information on work study, studying abroad etc etc, it includes this type of advice: "As a single student you will need approximately A$12,000รข€“A$17,000 per year for living expenses such as accommodation, food, transport, textbooks and some spending money. This amount will vary depending where you live (city or country), whether you are in a high or low cost area, and your personal lifestyle. This amount does not include international airfares or tuition fees." "As an international student on an Australian student visa, you can work up to 20 hours each week during semester, and full-time during vacation periods. Most universities and colleges have employment services that will help you find a job." Good luck with your applications!

I was an exchange student in Ireland for 2 years. I had to contact an exchange student organization. It was around $5,000 - $8,000 The schools are a bit different, they speak a little different than us Americans so it was hard to say stuff. If you want to go, then you can but it's a bit pricey. It's a great experience too.

I haven't, but I am going to be an exchange student next year. The best company is probably AFS http://www.usa.afs.org/usa_en/home The people who work there are really helpful and it has a great reputation. The cost to go to Australia is about 10,000 (for a year) but there are lots of scholarships and fundraising ideas. You should defenelity do it, it will be the time of your life and you will grow alot. I would check out the Ask and AFSer group on facebook or http://www.cultures-shocked.org/Joomla/forum/index.php?

When I was in high school we had lots of American, Japanese and Korean exchange students. Alot of high schools in Australia partner up with either student exchange companies or high schools in which they are exchanging students with. Like if our school sent 3 students to USA, we would usually get 3 American students (long stay or short stay) some time during the year. Same with Japanese students. Come to Australia, we don't bite really. Well not hard. And you won't have the same problem that Japanese students have, where you can't understand their accent sometimes.
