I was an exchange student in Ireland for 2 years. I had to contact an exchange student organization. It was around $5,000 - $8,000 The schools are a bit different, they speak a little different than us Americans so it was hard to say stuff. If you want to go, then you can but it's a bit pricey. It's a great experience too.

I haven't, but I am going to be an exchange student next year. The best company is probably AFS http://www.usa.afs.org/usa_en/home The people who work there are really helpful and it has a great reputation. The cost to go to Australia is about 10,000 (for a year) but there are lots of scholarships and fundraising ideas. You should defenelity do it, it will be the time of your life and you will grow alot. I would check out the Ask and AFSer group on facebook or http://www.cultures-shocked.org/Joomla/forum/index.php?

When I was in high school we had lots of American, Japanese and Korean exchange students. Alot of high schools in Australia partner up with either student exchange companies or high schools in which they are exchanging students with. Like if our school sent 3 students to USA, we would usually get 3 American students (long stay or short stay) some time during the year. Same with Japanese students. Come to Australia, we don't bite really. Well not hard. And you won't have the same problem that Japanese students have, where you can't understand their accent sometimes.
