It is as safe as you want it to be! Stay away from trouble spots, don't wander alone at night, etc. Simply put: Use your common sense.
2 :
what nationality are you?

Australia makes an ideal study destination for international students. If you are not an Australian citizen then you may apply for a student visa. For more information, you may visit http://www.principalvisas.com.au/

You'll be fine if you use common sense. Just avoid walking on backstreets too late at night, but Sydney is not more dangerous than any other big cities in the world.

What is the average wage for a waitress in Australia for a gap year student?
What is the average wage for a waitress in Australia for a gap year student?
I want to go to Australia for a gap year and am trying to calculate how much I would earn as a waitress or barmaid. How much do they pay on average? Would they take me for 6 months or is that too short? What qualifications would I need? Any other suggestions of what I could do to earn money? Polite answers please :) Thanks in advance...

Try this site for average wages: http://www.payscale.com/?co=au&cm_mmc=Google%20INTL%20Ads-_-Organic%20Keywords-_-OrganicSalary-_-award%20wages%20victoria&gclid=COCKvtuAlJYCFRlRagodDFJJEA Of course, all places are different but when I used to waitress I would get $19.50 an hour and all the staff would split the tips (though tipping isn't a custom in Australia so I wouldn't count that in expected earnings). Some places would definitely take you for 6 months. Particularly companies like Delaware North that do catering and functions at the sporting venues, which are often seasonal (e.g. football season, tennis, cricket, concerts, etc.). Many restaurants hire staff casually too and they often leave after a few months so I think you should have no problems there. In terms of qualifications, some places will be willing to do (and pay for) the training for you (Often big chains or companies), others will expect you to already have qualifications. The 2 mains ones are 1. Safe Food Handling 2. Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). Often TAFEs, community centers or adult education centers will offer these courses. Other suggestions: Nanny work Fruit Picking (though seasonal and hard work, often not near the cities) Retail

you experienced being an exchange student? Are there chaperones? It is with a group called People to People, I believe it was started by Eisenhower in the 50's. With such a short trip, would they stay in a hotel or with host families? The parent meeting is not until October 15, so I hoped you could help me out with some information while I'm waiting. Thanks! Benjamin F--I am excited. You are right. She is too, but we have to see how expensive it is first. I would have LOVED to have had this opportunity as a teen. Especially Australia...that is one of my favorite countries!

Look up the organization on the internet. Ask around the school because other kids might have been invited to. Ask their parents what they think of exchange students and if they are letting their kids go. Talk to the principal of the school and see what he thinks of the program. Since, it is a short trip the might stay at a hotel. Most of the time, for exchange students they stay with host families who have kids the same age as them. Most of the time, the host families are responsible, but if they aren't staying with host families they will be staying at a hotel and there will be chaperones. Our school does an exchange student program, bringing kids from Hong Kong, China, Germany, and other countries all over the world. Well, if you have any more questions...feel free to contact me.

This site provides links to the sites of all the universities in Australia. The university sites will have a section for International students which will explain the requirements to gain entry http://www.australian-universities.com/ You will need to obtain a Student Visa. Details for this are at http://www.immi.gov.au/ This will, explain what is required to obtain a student visa. The standards of most Australian universities are good. Most universities are in the capital cities of the Australian states. As a foreign student in Australia you may find it easier to adjust in a University that is in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane where there are a significant number of students from Chinese-speaking backgrounds.
