Should I be an exchange student in Australia?

Should I be an exchange student in Australia?
I'm 15 and i live in san diego. I really want to be an exchange student and at first i wanted to go to Italy but I dont speak the language (i'm taking spanish at school...i barely know that though). I was thinking Australia because the seasons are opposite from here and my councelor told me it would be way different than here. I know i wouldnt be learning a new language but theres a lot more reasons to be an exchange student than that. Oh and I was thinking of being there for a semester of school...or just during summer. what do you think?? being an exchange student doesnt mean you have to switch with someone. i was planning on going and staying there, and no one would live with my family.

No. Australia is like America's bastard brother. Go Third World for a real experience.

Australia would be a great place to visit but, unfortunately, that would mean some poor Australian would have to take your place in USA.

My daugther went there. It is an awfully long plane ride. She got horribly sunburnt. It was very expensive. she missed her family, so no, I'd say stay closer to home. She went for 2 weeks at Christmas time.

If you adapt well to new situations and know you wouldn't get too homesick, I say go for it!! I spent three weeks in Italy and loved it, and I've always wanted to go to Australia. If your parents are reluctant about it, see about going for just a few weeks in the summer before going an entire semester. It would be a great experience and look good on a college app.

Well if you study abroad I say do a little reading on some countries on wikipedia. As for "3rd world countries"...they are not even called that anymore...developing countries, I would seriously consider what you would be doing there. If this is your first time living a broad, go to a country that you feel that you would enjoy. I recommend England, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, or Japan.

Check out the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students. You lose a year of high school but if you wait until college you will receive college credit and it looks good on your resume. It costs from $3000 to $10000 plus your parents have to send you $200 per month or more. Sexual predators have been approved as host parents because fingerprint criminal checks are not done. Don't be surprised that criminals lie about their real names so their criminal past is not revealed. So I think it is too dangerous and you should wait until college.

I'm an international student in Australia, I think it's a wonderful idea. I was afraid just as you, now I'm happy I'm doing it. Once you make a few good friends, you be fine and you'll love it sooo much.. Go for it :)
