Is it possible to convert a tourist visa to a student visa in Australia?
Hi, I'm a US citizen staying in India currently. I've been accepted to UWA and am awaiting the Confirmation of Enrollment. By the time I receive it and then apply for the student visa, it will be extremely close to my start date. So in order to arrive a bit earlier, I was wondering if I could convert my ETA/tourist visa to a student visa while in Australia... Anyone? Anyone?

You can phone the embassy on this situation. Because tourist visa is different from student visa. I think you need to phone them for your protection. Good luck.

Because you're an American citizen and therefore on student assessment level 1, you are able to apply for your student visa while you're in Australia and there is no reason that I know of why you can't do so while you're on an ETA. All you need is the Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment - you don't need a letter or anything else. Take extreme care with your timing. Even though ETAs are multiple entry, you can only stay for 3 months at a time and DIAC don't like people only staying away for a few days or even weeks in between 3 month visits - if you try to return too soon, you may not be allowed to do so. The potential problem arises because you must say if you are onshore or offshore when you apply for your student visa. If you say 'onshore', the student visa will be granted onshore and will cancel your ETA - if you're offshore at the time, you won't get back in. If you say 'offshore' and you're onshore at the time it's granted, your ETA is cancelled and you're here without a visa and become an overstayer. Makes my head hurt!

If you marry a US citizen, you merely have to remain married for a certain length of time, then you can become a citizen. My friend married a guy from India so he could get citizenship. After about 3 years he applied to be a citizen. His visa was also renewed beyond its limit during this time in order for him to remain. Whatever the length of time is, you simply apply with your spouse, marriage license, and required indentification (passport, visa).

What you are hoping to do is illegal and immoral, so I think you should probably think of another plan. It is very wrong to marry someone just so that you can become a citizen of their country, and people who do that give immigrants a bad name.

You can do any type of work you wish as long as you don't work for more than 20 hours per week while your course is in session. You can work unlimited hours during official breaks.

If you have been granted Permission to Work, there are restrictions on the number of hours you can work. If you were granted a Student visa on or after 26 April 2008, you and your dependent family members will already have Permission to Work automatically included with your visa. If you were granted a Student visa before 26 April 2008 and have not yet applied for Permission to Work, you and your family members may only apply for Permission to Work after you have started your course in Australia.

As a high scoring student, I was wondering if it is possible to get a job tutoring younger students in some sort of tutorial centre. Does anyone know of any such centre that would accept current senior high school students (Year 11)? I've heard of it done before but I don't know where. Any advice, any advice at all, on this topic, would be good.

you cant move to australia unless you are skilled and experienced in an occupation listed as needing workers and at 18 you wont have the qualifications you could live there temporarily with a student visa but you will pay international student fees and have to prove you have enough money to support yourself,you will also need your own health insurance as you will not get it from australia

If you don't have access to a considerable amount of money to meet the requirements for a student visa, the only way you'll be able to come to Australia will be on a 12 months working holiday. Even for a working holiday visa, you will be expected to have as much as AUD$5000 plus money for a return ticket, though you may get away with less if you have free accommodation lined up with your friends. You'll be able to work at any kind of job for up to 6 months with any employer, but the visa is intended to be for a holiday with work as a secondary consideration. Yes, your time on a student visa can be counted in the required 4 year period. Don't forget the additional requirement that you must had absences from Australia of no more than 12 months in total in the four (4) years prior to application, and no more than ninety (90) days in the 12 month permanent residency period prior to application.

if you are a PR in Australia already, you DO NOT NEED a student visa to study in Australia. As long as you STAY IN australia your time will count no matter what you do - except for being in prison I think.

I'm an international student in Victoria, and I am taking up a three month course, I recently found out that I'm almost 3 months pregnant, I'm afraid that I won't be able to pursue my studies because of this. Women can study and be pregnant at the same time, make sure you visit a dr just to make sure you and the baby are all ok. Congratulations. You will have to watch the date of your return as some airlines will not allow a pregnant woman to fly much over her 7th month.

I am not familiar with Australian immigration laws, nor do I know if a baby born to an immigrant in Australia is automatically a citizen of Australia like they would be in the United States. However, I am willing to bet that two things will be considered: First, they will consider your health condition. I doubt they'd make you get on a plane or boat if a doctor says your health or the baby's health would be jeopardized. Second, your ability to extend the current visa would be another consideration. If you can extend it, they may see granting that as a way to permit you to stay that does not require them to recognize pregnancy as a reason to keep you there, as then they'd have to extend the same practice to other cases if they did cite pregnancy.

You will only be sent home if you fail to observe the conditions of your visa. If you continue attending your course and meeting its requirements, your being pregnant won't make the slightest difference.

No you are not. As it currently stands there are not enough intern places for all the graduates coming out of the university medical degrees. As such, from next year international students who completed their degree IN Australia are unlikely to be given an intern place - from the year after it will be 90% probable they have to return to their own country to complete the registration. So you will not be able to do your intern year in Australia.

My friend studied there for a semester. It is pretty cool. Newcastle is where he went and he had a blast. When you study abroad you take very minimal classes. My friend only had class 2 days a week. It is basically a looooong vacation. It costs a lot of money for all of the expenses but I am sure it is worth it. Expect a lot of beach and partying (if you're into that sort of thing)

Hey Australia's pretty cool, were all pretty laid back. Well school goes from 8:30 - 3:00, most school only have 6 periods and 6 subjects a day (the most is 8 at other schools). We get 2 lunch breaks, and homework depends on the subjects you take and the school you go to. School starts in January and finishes a couple of weeks before christmas, but we have 4 school terms which are 9-10 weeks and holidays in between those term (usually 1-3 weeks depends on the school again). There's heaps of great places in Australia - Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Cairns, Canberra. It really depends what your looking for, if you looking for more of a beach thing Sydney, Newcastle is better. Or amazing city's would be Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane! Well that's all i can really think of, hope i helped a bit! :) oh and no we don't ride kangaroo's to school

I'm an International student in Australia under the 457 visa. I've just completed my Bachelor Degree but to be registered in my profession in Australia I require a 4th year. Currently I am holding student visa sub class 572, but I am eligible to apply for Skilled graduate visa SC 485, as I finished my 2 years study. Is it possible to cancel my student visa once I applied for Skilled graduate visa SC 485 ?

You have to be in Australia when your 485 visa is granted and you must have a visa in order to stay here. If you were to cancel your 572 student visa before being granted your 485, you would be here without a visa i.e. illegally. If your student visa expires before you get your 485, you will automatically be granted a bridging visa to enable you to stay here while you wait for a decision on your 485. If your 485 is granted while your 572 is still current, the granting of the new visa automatically cancels any existing visa.

There has been a history of people from India to apply for a student visa to attend "hairdressing, cooking and IT" courses which are the cheapest around and never turn up - but disappear into the woodwork. The government is now checking the status of students so the colleges have to report any non-attendance of international students in their courses to the immigration department. In other words - you have to be here to study - not work.

You need to be a genuine student - so you are here to study. Student visas in most countries (it's common in other places like the UK) require you to be there to study. Depending on the country, you may be able to work a few hours a week - ten to fifteen hours a week, However working full time is a big no-no. Alas many "students" come in to work not sturdy hence the word genuine...

The VAC will be $540 but you must have included him on your original visa application even though he didn't come to Australia with you. If he wasn't included, he won't be able to apply now. He must be dependent on you and you must also prove that you have funds for his return airfare and an additional $8000 per year for school tuition if he's aged 5-18 and $2400 per year for his living expenses.

WHY do you think you should be granted a student visa? You need an exceptional reason (a very very good reason) I'm certainly NOT going to tell you how to write this answer. Aussie immigrations are aware that Nigeria is a country of SCAMMERS so you have to proove that you are NOT a scammer. One more thing - Do you have the many thousands of dollars (money) required to SUPPORT yourself while you are studying in Australia? Nigeria is a very poor country. I would be very suspicious about how you got your money. You CANNOT work while you are studying and you cannot be scamming people. If you do, you get caught and jailed, if not deported.

It can't be a dependant if its not born yet. And why are you moving country and doing a course if you're having a baby! There's always next year isn't there? you can delay the course but not the kid....

Before you do that though, you should lodge an enquiry to find out the exact procedure, but you haven't told us what country you're from so I can't be any more detailed than that.
