Can you get a Permanent Residency from a Student Visa in Australia?

Can you get a Permanent Residency from a Student Visa in Australia?
I was wondering that if I got a student visa in Australia, would I be able to apply to permanent residency after a certain amount of time living and studying there?

People who want to study in Australia may be granted a Student visa that entitles them to come to Australia on a temporary basis for a specified period to undertake study at an Australian educational institution. While many overseas students make a decision to apply for permanent residence upon completing their studies, this is an entirely separate process and there is no guarantee that, on the basis of having held a student visa, a person will meet the requirements to be granted permanent residence. http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students-gsm.htm If you come to Australia on a Student visa, Permanent Residency doesn't automatically follow but your studies may have made you eligible to apply for a permanent visa or for a temporary visa that may eventually lead to a permanent one. If you study in Australia for at least 2 academic years (92 weeks) and if your studies have led to qualifications in an occupation on the Skilled Occupations List (SOL) and if you can pass the points test and meet English language, health and character requirements, you can apply for a permanent onshore visa. The SOL is reviewed every year and occupations are removed if there is no longer a high demand. If your occupation is no longer on the SOL when you graduate, you must either study for a different occupation on a new Student visa ; find employer sponsorship for a temporary visa or leave the country. If you graduate with qualifications in an eligible occupation but still need additional work experience or English skills in order to pass the points test, you can apply for a Graduate visa that provides an 18 month temporary work visa to enable you to get to the required standard so that you can apply for a permanent visa. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/_pdf/sol-schedule3.pdf The current SOL - a new one will be announced in May http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/visa-options-inside.htm Visas Alternatively, studying in Australia gives you the opportunity to find an employer who will be willing to sponsor you after graduation for a temporary visa. After working on a temporary employer sponsored visa for 2 years, that employer can sponsor you for a permanent ENS visa if your occupation is on the Employer Nomination Scheme Occupations List (ENSOL) and if the employer is willing and able to meet all of the conditions for ENS sponsorship. http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2010L03158 The ENSOL http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skilled-workers/visa-options.htm Employer sponsored visas
