You can certainly go to New Zealand during vacation time as your student will allow for multiple entries to Australia, but whether you need a visa for NZ will depend entirely on your passport country. There is no blanket arrangement covering international students studying in Australia. See "Do I need a visa or permit?" at: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/visit/

No, only permanent residence permit holders of Australia may travel to New Zealand visa vaiwed. You will need a visa if you should not hold the citizenship of a visa.waived country. Source(s): http://glossary.immigration.govt.nz/visafreecountries.htm

Your student visa in Australia gives you absolutely no rights when it comes to holidaying in New Zealand. It will depend on your passport country on whether you will need a tourist visa or not. Only Australian citizens are entitled to the 'agreement' you mention.
