yes it is possible. we have lots of exchange students here coming from the US, japan, korea, england etc. for the cost of living here for three months really depends. i have a norwegian neighbor who lives across my condo unit, for the entire month of rent it costs her 30,000 per month -- all of the facilities and appliances are already in there but for the consumables it really depends on how you spend.

What I am familiar with is the Long-Term Youth Exchange. If you qualify (for example in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program), you can become an exchange student. The program is one year in the Senior year (4th year) of high school (equivalent to Grade 10 in Australia). It is required that you attend and pass the classes scheduled for the seniors as the grades will be part of your records when you return to Australia. You will be residing with a host family/ families (depending on how many volunteer families are available to be your interim family). The host club decides as to which school you will go to. Your plane fare may be covered, depending on the host club's budget. If not, that is the biggest expense that you will incur. You need not spend on food although it is advisable to bring your own money for your expenses just in case. You will be set back one year of schooling in Australia, but being an exchange student is a wonderful experience and is highly recommended.
