International student at the University of Melbourne in Australia?

International student at the University of Melbourne in Australia?
Has anyone from the U.S. studied at the University of Melbourne? What was your experience like as an international student? I am interested in getting my graduate degree there, and I'm curious about other people's experiences.

Im going to apply an Australia student visa.?

Im going to apply an Australia student visa.?
My finance is no problem, I got offer from Sydney University. But my problem is my bachelor degree. Can anyone tell me . Do immigration officers always verify a degree? or they just look at it .

The chance of Australian immigration verifying a degree will depend to a large extent on where you're from. They'll probably accept it at face value for the purpose of a Student visa if you've been accepted by USyd though if you're from one of the several countries that are notorious for phony documentation, it's quite possible that it will be verified. If your degree is dodgy though, your BIG problem will come after your studies if you try to apply for an immigration visa and have to go through skills assessment. If you are sprung then (and you probably will be), you will not only be denied your visa, but could also be liable for a 10 year or even permanent ban for immigration fraud.

I want to do a student exchange program in Sydney, Australia, but it's too expensive?

I want to do a student exchange program in Sydney, Australia, but it's too expensive?
It's about 20 thousand dollars for one year. I really, really want to do this. The scholarships only cover about one thousand or less. Are there any other ways or programs for high school student exchange in Sydney for one year that does not cost that much money?
Sydney - 2 Answers

1 :
The basic problem is that the New South Wales government tuition fee for an international high school student is AUD$12,900 per year for attendance at a government school and there's no way to get out of that. Private school fees are much higher. Given that there are expenses over and above tuition costs, it's pretty obvious that it wouldn't be possible to reduce the cost to the overseas student - even $20,000 is very reasonable when you consider what you get for the remaining $7,100. Your only chance would be to find a scholarship to cover more of the cost and it sounds like you've already investigated that option.

lots you have to have $12000 a year (each) to live on, and you have to state you have enough for your first year before you are allowed to get a student visa :P depending on what level of study you're doing you might have different requirements including chest x-rays and stuff.

That sounds like a scam - Australian universities do no give out loans to international students (neither do banks) - those sites are all scams.

Bad credit student loan that is sponsored by the government is dispersed by the colleges and schools. The amount that could be acquired as government student loan varies dependent upon the requirement of the borrower.

Australia Student Visa fund declaration?

Australia Student Visa fund declaration?
When we apply Australia Student we need to sign a declaration stating that we have access to enough funds to meet the cost of our remainder of our expected stay in Australia. Do we need to show any documents? Or we just need to sign it and show them we have enough fund for 1 year? By the way, i don't have any sponsor, i depend on myself, and my current money is only enough to cover 1 year of all the fees. Thanks a lot for your answer... I mean the declaration that we are going to sign do we need an documents for that? Not the 1st YEAR funds. Thanks a lot!
Other - Australia - 2 Answers

yes you need documents among them: your latest credit card bill and bank statement where your funds are
2 :
The application checklist for Assessment Level 2 states that you not only have to sign the declaration, but must also provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover yourself and any family members coming with you for living costs, tuition costs and school costs for any school-age children for the first 12 months of your stay in Australia. The declaration by itself is sufficient for the remainder of your stay and you will not need to attach evidence of funds for the period after the first 12 months to your application. The following sets everything out in detail: http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students/573-2/financial.htm

It will need to be a relative. Here are the rules from the immigration website: If you are under 18 years of age, you must have acceptable arrangements for your accommodation, support and general welfare for the duration of your student visa or until you turn 18 (whichever happens first). You must show that you will either: live in Australia with your parent or legal custodian live in Australia with a relative over 21 years of age who is nominated by your parent or legal custodian live in Australia under a welfare arrangement that has been approved by your education provider. http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students/573-4/eligibility-student-18.htm
2 :
no , if youre under 18 it wont even be possible you ll need someone whos relative - someone from your family lots of people want to do this in that way but government needs to be sure that this person wont want to escape with you or something hope you understand

If you have a Student visa for Australia, it automatically includes Permission to Work. You will be allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week while your course is in session and unlimited hours during official vacations. You can work anywhere at any type of work (you're not restricted to on campus work) but must not begin work until you actually start your course. See 'Working while studying' on the following - the link is to a Higher Education visa but the same provisions apply to all other Student visas: http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students/573-1/how-the-visa-works.htm

The USA is an assessment level 1 country so you will be able to apply for your student visa when you're in Australia on a tourist visa or ETA. Once you're accepted by the university though, you will be able to apply for your student visa online from wherever you are and it will only take a few days to a couple of weeks (at most) to be granted, so the timing simply won't be a problem.

Sounds good and from the heart. I assume you are studying to be a teacher or similar? If you are wishing to study child care then I'd recommend changing child's care to children's services. also use the full name of Australia instead of AU. I've done an edit for you below. If it's a teaching degree you are after just change children's services to teaching. 'I am choosing to study in Australia for its quality world class education and in order for me to further enrich my knowledge in children's services, for which I have a strong passion.' Good luck.

Normal processing time for a U.S. passport is 4-6 weeks: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/processing/processing_1740.html You can get a passport faster (in about 2-3 weeks) but it will cost an extra $60 (in addition to the the $85 fee to get a passport for a minor under the age of 16). Please be aware you will need to get the other parent's consent to get your son a passport even if you're married or if your husband is deceased: http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/ds3053/ds3053_846.html

When will international students learn that Australia is NOT a racist country?

When will international students learn that Australia is NOT a racist country?
Ok, I find it very ironic how international students accuse Australia of being a 'racist' nation, when the Australian government is making great efforts to give international students appropriate accommodation in Australia. Of course, I have more points to make my question more understood. Fact 1: The Australian government allows international students to come and study at Australian universities, meanwhile many other countries DO NOT offer the same opportunities. Fact 2: The Australian government developed English classes to help international students to develop better English speaking skills. However, some international students are reluctant to learn English, instead they bribe other people to complete their English essays for them. Many international students use their "poor english" as a reason to avoid conversation with other people. Fact 3: Australia is a multicultural country that respects all cultures. However, many international students only associate with members from their own ethnic or language background. They are reluctant to talk to any person from a different culture. Fact 4: Inbternational students are allowed to celebrate their national events in Australia. However, international students are often reluctant to participate in any national Australian event like Australia Day and ANZAC Day. If you ask an international student to come celebrate with you, they might make up excuses like; "I'm busy studying" or "My english is poor". Fact 5: Many international students work illegally, this leaves many Australian citizens unemployed. Many local students must wake up at 5am to work, or else they cannot pay their rent. Even though international students work for very long hours, most of their money goes to their own families living OUTSIDE Australia. International students do not even pay taxes since they are working ILLEGALLY. Fact 6: Whenever someone harrasses an international student, the whole country hears about it for the next 2 months. However, there are more Australian citizens being assaulted and it only appears on the news for less than a week. Fact 7: International students don't contribute to Australia, they take whatever they receive, and offer nothing in return. They complain about student poverty while their wealthy parents are paying for their education. Ok. This pretty much explains most of it. If you've actually bothered to read all that, then you tell me; who is more 'racist'?
Other - Australia - 4 Answers

1 :
NEVER!! because we ARE a racist nation. we don't need all these asians clogging our education system they have better systems in their own countries and we don't want 'halal approved' seal on OUR vegemite jar like wtf! we don't want a whole suburb where we aussies can't read anything or where the mafia donimate every house or people walking round the shops with cloth head to foot to 'cover their beauty' or whatever that crap is. and indians driving our cabs who don't know where they are going and rip us of just to get somewhere AND MORE BLODDY BOATS FULL OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS who paid some criminal 20 grand to flee their own country to come to a detention centre on our shores. if i don't know any better i would say that YOU are an international student yourself so go and cook a fried monkey spider or whatever the hell you eat where you come from and get yourself a one way ticket outta here REAL AUSSIES WERE BORN AND BRED HERE AND TRUE BLUE AUSTRALIAN'S WE WILL ALWAYS BE.
2 :
When Australia implements Sharia law, requires burkas for women, takes the vote from women, gives non-Whites 6 votes each, and so on. Basically only when Australia totally surrenders to the anti-western, anti-capitalist, anti-democratic elements of the world. THEN maybe Australia (plus Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA) will cease being called racist by them.
3 :
1. Allowing people into the country does not mean we're not racist. 2. You're accusing 'many international students' of cheating? Yeah, that's certainly not racist. 3. Australian students do exactly the same thing when they study in other countries. It's intimidating to be studying in a country with a different language and culture, especially when everyone is as welcoming as you are. 4. You 'celebrate' on ANZAC Day? It's a day of remembrance for fallen soldiers, not an excuse to invite your mates over for a celebration. In any case, I'm finding it hard to believe that you would actually invite international students to do anything with you. 5. That's not really true, and it's yet another example of you making an offensive generalisation about international students. 6. Again, that's not true. The vast majority of harassment is not reported. 7. International students make a significant contribution to Australia. Many work and pay taxes while studying, and their course fees provide an important source of funding for our universities.
4 :
Forget the international students. I am totally embarrassed for the Aussies out there that seem to think that the REAL indigenous Australians can be treated like second class citizens and that racist attittudes towards them is acceptable. I feel that a lot of Aussies that are perceived as racist aren't actually racist but are afraid to go against the racist opinions of others (not always racist opinions, maybe bigotry or ignorance). I've seen it a thousand times where a group of Aussies band together and denigrate another group of people, whether it be New Zealanders, English, Americans or whoever. Whenever a question about "Australia's racist attitude" is asked all the answerers say that it is just a minority of Aussies that are like that but on the other side of the coin all the refugees are terrorists, all the international students are cheats and steal their education from Australia or all Muslims are disrespectful to the "Australian way of life". Also something that is said a lot is "Australia is a multicultural society" (in the same breath) "But you gotta be and do stuff like us". There just seems to be a lot of contridictions when it comes to the answers that come up. Anyway how can one person say if a country is racist? They can only go on their own experiences. Of course white Australians would experience less racism than a darker person.

I am a former student at Monash. It's a great university with many international students. Your main problem will be to get used to the cold winters in Victoria. Winter temperatures can range from 0 C over night to 12 C during the day, and you could be facing strong winds and a lot of rain. It is not a matter of 10 shirts, but to make sure that you have enough thick woolen jumpers, a warm jacket and raincoat. You should also consider that you will have to do laundry once a week, therefore consider how much clothing you will need per week to change into every day and then have it all washed at the end of the week. Hope this helps.
3 :
First off, establish a bank account before you come over. This can be done over the telephone with a bank such as Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, etc. Additionally, you can deposit money into that account before arriving. As far as clothing, Melbourne is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. If you are starting uni at the beginning of the year you need to arrive in shorts and a tee-shirt, but bring along jeans and a decent jacket and sweater. You will definitely need winter clothing, but in my experience it is simply best to have your parents shit it to you via Fedex. Quantity wise, it is impossible to say, however, the best method is to have enough clothing that you can go two weeks before having to do laundry. If you need anything else you can purchase it here, or have your parents ship it over. Remember Oz has seasons in reverse, so when clothing is new here it is on clearance everywhere else... best thing ever.

Moving to England is very hard as they will not let you into the country if you are there to get a job. When they ask "business or pleasure?" when you get off the plane. Say "pleasure" otherwise you won't be let in.

Australia student visa!!?

Australia student visa!!?
I am 18 and would like to do an apprenticeship in Australia, would i be able to do an apprenticeship in oz with a student visa? i live in the uk

Apprenticeships are only available to citizens (PRs possibly) so on a student visa you will not be eligible to apply for one. One of the reasons is that you get paid significantly d uring the training for the work that you do - and the work is significantly over the 20 hours you are permitted to do on a student visa.

Is there a christian family in Australia that would take me in as an exchange student?

Is there a christian family in Australia that would take me in as an exchange student?
I am seriously considering coming to Australia to study abroad. But I am a devout christian and my parents won't let me stay with a family who is not. I would sure apprieciate it if christian family would take me in.

Good on your parents ! What I would suggest is to google Churches in Australia of your particular denomination ...decide on a state ...then email them & see if they would be prepared to canvas their congregation to see if anyone would like to help you... We have had exchange students over the years & still take in student interns from the Southern Baptist Churches for a few weeks each year...it's a great way to learn about different cultures !
2 :
LOL.... the biggest p*ssheads I know are actually devout, churchgoing Catholics! Anyhoo, you don't specify your religion. People in Australia aren't really "devout" the way people in America are. If it's a concern about getting to church on Sunday, then I'd contact the Australian branch of the church you belong to and go from there. If it's more a concern about respect for your beliefs and the general morals of the host family then it's not so much of a problem. I don't know the ins and outs of host families, but I think they're usually families with kids at private schools, and the private schools are generally attached to a religion. It doesn't necessarily reflect the families true beliefs though.

Future international student to australia?
Hey I got accepted to an australian university swinburne. Problem is my course fees are 23000 per year. I've tried scholarships(Ausaid) and I can't get a student loan cause I'm not an australian citizen and don't have permanent residency. Anyone out there know what I can do or rather are there any other options for me?

These are issues you should have looked into prior to applying to an Australian uni. International study is only something you can do if you can afford it - if you cannot you either earn the money for a couple of years and then apply or go to your local university.
2 :
Tim you still have options but they are a little tough. 1. you need to manage AUD 11500 that's your first sem fee. 2. Other than that need about another 800 $ for initial expenses in Australia. 3. Find part time job in Australia all international students do that it can take care of your living expenses plus you can save some every month for next sem fee. as by part time jobs you can manage 2500 a month and living expenses in Melbourne are about $900 a month on sharing basis. and then in vacations you can work full time .. Ya its tough but if you are serious yo can do that.

LOL! No. You visa is for studies, not work. An a visa holder can never sponsor someone else.
2 :
Regardless of what you are in your home country - you are a student in Australia not a businessman. You can only "sponsor" your wife and only then if you included her on your original application.
3 :
No.. 'coz you're under a student visa... You can hire an employee if you have a business visa.

What is the minimum wage a student can earn by a part time job in Australia?

What is the minimum wage a student can earn by a part time job in Australia?
Also will it be enough for an international student who is allowed 20hrs of work per week to take care of his education along with his daily needs?

Not much its 5000 to 10000
2 :
well, you can get copped out with a min of $6 an hour. that definatly wont be enough for education and dayly needs... i suggest going for a good job that pays around $20 an hour... even then thats only 400 a week. Make sure you save up big before you plan to come over
3 :
Im pretty sure the minimum part time wage is around about $6.00 an hour, depending on were you are working. However if you work in Hospitality you will get paid a pretty good rate ( find out more here: http://www.pdfdownload.org/pdf2html/pdf2html.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lhmu.org.au%2F_dbase_upl%2Flhmu_hospitality.pdf&images=yes ) However it will all depend on what your manager thinks about how long your working shift should last, how much time you have off, and what days suit best. Also i dont think $6.00 an hour is going to cover what you need. I think your going to have to look into it a bit more and find out how much the costs are, and how much your going to need.
4 :
i think its twelve bucks an hour
5 :
Depends how old you are but basically it can be anything from $10-$20. I am 19 and i get paid $16 working in retail on a casual rate. Part time is less because you get annual leave and sick pay. I wouldnt accept anything less than $10
6 :
All the international students I know get money from their parents because the 20hrs is not enough. Just get a job that pays penalties and work on the weekends. I wouldn't accept a job paying less than $16/hr and that would have to be with penalties and that would be as a last resort. Most jobs pay around $18/hr with penalties (thats for part time casual work).

Is there any student loans to study in Australia?

Is there any student loans to study in Australia?
If I want to change my residency to be a permanent resident in Australia, and study in Australia, is there any way that I could get a study loan?
Financial Aid - 3 Answers

If you are a US citizen, there are study abroad programs that you can apply for. If you have financial aid, it will continue to pay but I think that you will have to pay for the trip, but if you want to change your residency you may either have loans before you go. You may want to talk to someone at your school.
2 :
PR in Australia are eligible for the local study fee rate BUT they are not permitted to defer it they have to pay up front. There are no loans available. You need to be qualified first in order to apply for a PR - you cant just change your student visa to a PR.
3 :
remember that is very difficult to become a citizen of Australia and it is beyond the financial means of the average american for sure. You must be pretty wealthy to become a citizen.
